Markitit

MarkitIt is a platform designed to centralize  event search, application, and vendor-host communication process for small buisnessses attending pop-up market events. I worked on this project as the sole UI/UX Designer for three months with a team of student developers as part of BU Spark’s Innovation Fellowship course.

Inital Steps: Finding our Early EvangelistsTo ground our product in real-world needs, we conducted initial interviews with local pop-up vendors and small business owners. These conversations helped us identify common challenges in event planning, vendor visibility, and customer communication. By listening to their stories and pain points, we found our early evangelists—entrepreneurs who not only validated our idea but were excited to test it. Their input became the foundation for our user-centered design approach and informed every step of our development process.

Different options of Markitit logo.
Branding MarkititAs the sole designer for Markitit, I was given creative freedom to build the visual identity of the product from the ground up. Since this was my first experience in product design, I initially leaned into my personal preferences when creating wireframes. But through two rounds of critique and collaboration with my teammates, I began to understand the importance of balancing creativity with the professionalism our entrepreneurial users expected.

When designing the logo, I wanted to emphasize the wordplay in “Markitit”—a blend of "market" and "mark it." I experimented with different type treatments and ultimately landed on a handwritten “M” that conveyed a sense of personality, movement, and handmade charm, reflecting the vibrant nature of the vendors we serve. The final logo features a location pin, symbolizing both physical connection and the act of marking—just as vendors must keep track of their events, Markitit serves as a tool to help them organize, manage, and leave their mark with ease.

Conducting User InterviewsTo determine if our web app would resonate with audiences, we conducted 10 usability tests with small business owners. They gave us valuable feedback on the app’s functionality, design clarity, and overall user experience. Their input guided key improvements to our onboarding flow, dashboard layout, and feature prioritization to better meet the needs of real users.

Final Demo Day Presentation

Our team had the incredible opportunity to present our final project to a panel of industry professionals at the conclusion of the Spark! Innovation Program. We were honored to be named runners-up for both the Judge’s Innovation Award and the Audience Choice Award!

This course was a transformative experience that opened my eyes to the dynamic world of product design. Collaborating with developers for the first time gave me valuable insight into the back-end process and strengthened my understanding of how design and development intersect.

One of the highlights of the program was receiving thoughtful feedback from industry professionals who generously shared their expertise and passion for innovation. Their perspectives deepened my appreciation for the field and motivated me to continue exploring UI/UX design. I’m excited to keep building on this experience and take on future design challenges with new skills! :)
